In 2010 it was clear to many residents that there were simply not enough activities designed specifically to promote wellness amongst the town’s senior population, so they decided to do something about it! A committee was formed to put in place an exercise program for the town’s 50-years-and-up demographic. In 2011, the group got permission to use the Downtown Market building for their activities, and the programs began with gusto!
At first, there were some challenges, not just from a financial point of view, but also in creating an exercise program that was safe and fun for all participants, regardless of their age. But eventually everything fell into place, and the results have been outstanding. When the classes began, there were roughly twenty or so people who came out twice a week. These days, it’s not uncommon to see more than a hundred people in a week!
Seniors in Tracadie-Sheila are happier than ever, enjoying free, age-appropriate exercise classes, and most importantly meeting new friends!
