Doaktown Elementary has joined the Wellness Movement and is the proud winner of a $1000 wellness grant. The school is inviting parents and community members to celebrate with them and participate in fun activities led by the students. This activity will be a kick off to a School Wellness Day being held later in the Spring.
The wellness initiative at Doaktown Elementary takes a mental fitness approach. Students participate in a Leaders in Me program which follows Stephen Covey’s 7 habits of highly effective people. In this program, students take on leadership roles in engaging their fellow classmates in activities in and outside the classroom. Many of their activities are designed to build self-esteem, teach new skills and encourage mindfulness. Students also take part in enrichment activities which include yoga, curling, dance, and nutrition. The k-2 yoga program teaches kids breathing techniques to help with anger management. Grades 3 to 5 also have the opportunity to learn guitar, curling, Pilates, archery, and dance.
In honour of Nutrition Month, the school will be hosting a Wellness Day which will include sessions led by local health professionals. Topics will include healthy eating, physical activity, dental health, mindfulness and yoga. The school hopes to use their grant money to enhance their Leaders in Me program as well as the school’s overall wellness in the 2013-2014 school year! The ball is rolling at Doaktown Elementary!
